Alice Mahar (1956-)
Alice Maher is an Irish contemporary artist from Cahir, Mayo. She is an artist who uses a variety of media to create her art, including painting, sculpture, photography, instillation, drawing, and print. Her art style is described by the Irish Museum of Modern Art as 'within the realms of nature and culture, subversion and transformation, mythology and memory.'
I first learnt about Maher while doing history of art in my Leaving Cert art class. My teacher was a big fan of her work, and wanted to show us more contemporary forms of art, as well as to learn about more female and Irish artists. I love the visual appeal of much of her pieces. Every collection is very individual to themselves, and they all have very different subject matters and styles to them. I also find her to be very inspiring, as a young Irish woman wanting to breaking into the art and creative world. Another thing that I like about her as an artist, is that as her pieces are very conceptual and surreal, she doesn't strictly give a straightforward description about her pieces, and likes to leave the interpretation up to the viewers.
David Bowie (1947-2016)
David Bowie was born David Robert Jones in Brixton, London in 1947. He released his first solo album in 1962, and went on to be one of the most influential and innovative musical artists of the 20th century, and becoming one of the best selling artists world wide.
Anybody who has even briefly met me, knows that I am madly in love with Bowie and his work - I've even got the tattoo to prove it. I find him to be such an inspiring artist, as he created and made what he wanted to even in a time when being outside of the societal norms was very much frowned upon. Although now there is less of that societal pressure, I still find it inspiring. Like when he was openly bisexual and would portray himself to be incredibly feminine in the 1970s, where it was still barely legal to be a homosexual, I find to be incredibly inspiring. And, I really love his music also. He never allowed himself to be stuck inside the one genre, and would be very experimental with the type of music that he made, again inspiring me to also be trying new things  and mediums when it comes to creating things myself.

Lady Gaga ((1986-)
Stefani Joanna Angelina Germanotta was born in New York City in 1986. She began performing and singing from a young age, and rose to fame after the release of her debut album The Fame. She has since had a very diverse and colour career, with exploring different genres and steaming into acting.
Since Poker Face became a massive hit in 2007, I have always had a love for Lady Gaga, which has grown more as I myself have grown as a woman and an artist. I find her and her work very inspiring, as like David Bowie, she is always looking for ways to push the boundaries and do the unexpected. She aims to shock and stand out with her art, while also sending a message or advocating for something. My favourite one of these is her song Paparazzi, and her subsequent performance of it at the 2009 VMAs. It is a very visually shocking performance, as she mimics how the pressure and suffocation from the paparazzi can hinder and 'kill' the artist. I find her to be a very exciting artist, as every new project she does is so different from the last.
